The Struggle and Shape of Growth and Purpose

“It is a paradox in the contemporary world that in our desire for peace we must willingly give ourselves to struggle.”
— Linda Hogan, CHICKASAW

In the journey towards peace and spiritual awakening, we must embrace the struggle as a part of growth. Our ancestors have guided us through the lessons of sacrifice and prayer, teaching us to struggle for clarity and transformation. Every living thing grows through conflict—be it the birth of a deer or the sprouting of a seed. Through struggle, we embrace the full cycle of growth: recognize, acknowledge, forgive, and change.

Similarly, addiction shapes our thoughts and our lives in ways we might not even recognize. Our moods, actions, and very essence become misshapen as our disease takes control. Yet, recovery brings with it the opportunity to reshape our lives with spiritual ideals. Denial gives way to admission, secrecy to honesty, isolation to fellowship, and despair to faith. Our thoughts, once warped by addiction, now find clarity and purpose, guided by a loving Higher Power.

In helping others, we achieve one of the highest aspirations of the human heart. Before recovery, our minds were detached from our innate desire to help, but now our shared experiences become a powerful force for mutual healing. When we share our journeys—whether it’s moments of joy or profound pain—we become each other’s support system. This mutual help gives us purpose and keeps us clean.

By accepting the gift of conflict as a natural part of growth, allowing spiritual ideals to reshape our thoughts, and finding purpose in helping others, we transcend cultural boundaries. We come closer to a universal truth: the journey to well-being and spiritual awakening is an interwoven path of struggle, revelation, and communal support.

Just for today, let us embrace conflict as a vital part of our growth, allow spiritual ideals to guide our recovery, and find purpose in lifting each other up. In this journey, we discover our true selves and find peace.
