Wisdom of Openness and Honesty

Telling about our lives is important for those who come after us, for those who will see our experience as part of their own historical struggle.

Addicts tend to live secret lives. It is a great relief to get rid of all our secrets and to share the burden of our past.

A new idea cannot be grafted onto a closed mind.

How important it is for us to support one another? How impactful it is to truly share our experiences, culture, and traditions with honesty and openness? These shared stories are not just for us, but for those who come after, who will see our experiences as part of their own journey. In the Native American tradition, the act of storytelling is a powerful tool that ensures cultural continuity and personal authenticity. It is through the brave act of sharing that we break the chains of secrecy that bind us.

We’ve heard it said that “we’re as sick as our secrets.” Secrets are burdens that weigh us down, causing us shame and isolation. Why do we cling to them? Perhaps we fear judgment or believe that we cannot be forgiven. Yet, holding onto these secrets only fuels our anguish. Just as our ancestors found relief in sharing their stories with their kin, we must find the courage to speak our truths.

Remember who you are: a recovering individual who has found freedom by admitting powerlessness and seeking help. The same principle applies to whatever secrets plague you. Share them with someone you trust—a friend, a sponsor, a confidant. Only when our secrets stop being secrets can we begin to find relief from the shame they cause.

This journey of unburdening yourself must also come with an open mind. Just as Linda Hogan speaks of the importance of storytelling for future generations, the recovery journey speaks of the importance of open-mindedness. To genuinely heal and grow, you must remain receptive to new ideas and perspectives, including spiritual ones. Whether you come from a deeply religious background or a secular one, being open to new spiritual concepts enriches your existing beliefs and promotes growth.

So, let us merge these insights: share your stories to unburden your soul, support each other to foster communal strength, and keep an open mind to cultivate spiritual enrichment. Each step you take will not only benefit you but will also light the path for others, creating a tapestry of wisdom that transcends cultural boundaries.

Just for Today: I am committed to living authentically, supporting my community, and keeping an open mind. By sharing my stories and unburdening my secrets, I free myself and enrich my spirit.
